This is a self-initiated project where I designed a triangle-shaped smartwatch inspired by its counterpart, the "Pyramid" tablet featured in the TV series "The Office." Assuming the existence of such a device, the project explores how its user interface and user experience would be implemented. As it challenges me to solve the problem of understanding the experience in a unique product and adapting the user interface to a different screen and product.

In initial brainstorming and sketching phase. Early concept sketches and mood boards are presented, illustrating how the triangle shape was adapted for a smartwatch. The focus was on maintaining aesthetic appeal while considering ergonomic factors for a wearable device.

Design Challenge

Adapting a user interface to a triangular screen posed unique challenges. This slide outlines the obstacles faced, such as:

  • Screen Real Estate Optimization: Ensuring essential information fits within the unconventional shape.

  • Readability: Designing text and icons that are easily readable on angled edges.

  • Navigation: Developing intuitive navigation without standard rectangular screen conventions.

Fitness Tracking Features

Focusing on the core functionality of tracking workouts and steps, this slide displays:

  • Activity Dashboard: A summary of daily steps, calories burned, and active minutes, presented in a clean layout.

  • Workout Modes: Different exercise options with graphics that align with the triangular theme.

  • Progress Charts: Visual representations of fitness goals using triangle-based graphs.

Showcases the vibrant and minimalist UI design.:

  • Home Screen: Featuring a central clock with quick access to essential apps.

  • App Layout: A menu that is simple, utilizing the triangular space efficiently.

  • Gesture Controls: Implementing swipe and tap gestures optimized for the device's shape.

The innovative solutions devised to overcome the challenges:

  • Custom Grid System: A bespoke grid that aligns with the triangle's geometry to place UI elements harmoniously.

  • Iconography: Icons that fit comfortably within triangular or angular spaces.

  • Notifications: Pop-up banners designed to appear without obstructing key information.

Project Reflection and Future Prospects

Reflect on the project's impact:

  • Lessons Learned: Insights gained about designing for non-traditional screen shapes and the importance of user-centric design.

  • Potential Developments: Ideas for future features like integration with other devices, more apps tailored for the triangle interface, and expanding customization options.

  • Industry Implications: How this project challenges conventional design norms and could inspire innovation in wearable technology.
